Beyond normal Power i administration by iTech Solutions: Accessing Your FSP by Ethernet

In their January 2012 newsletter, Pete Massiello of iTech Solutions shows you how to find the Ethernet addresses for the Flexible Service Processors (FSPs) on Power 5, Power 6, and Power 7 machines.

All System i and Power i boxes have one or two FSPs. According to IBM,

The Flexible Service Processor (FSP) firmware provides diagnostics, initialization, configuration, run-time error detection, and correction

This is information I don’t usually see in print, and I’m not sure many regular iSeries administrators will need to contact their FSPs directly. FSP access seems like more of a service issue.

However, if you ever need to contact the FSPs (say you’re replacing an HMC and need to verify the FSP address), this is good info. Look in the newsletter’s table of contents and click on the link for Address of my FSP?
