IBM i 7.2 is Ready, But is the Vendor Community Ready?

#preferred IBM i graphicIBM released version 7.2 of the IBM i operating system on Friday, May 2nd, and the new OS is one of the major topics here at the 2014 COMMON annual Meeting and Exposition in Orlando, Florida.

And while IBM and their business partners are touting i 7.2’s benefits, there wasn’t a lot of talk about whether IBM i third-party vendors were ready and able to run their software on the new OS: a key prerequisite for any operating system upgrade.

So I took an informal poll  of 26 different IBM i third-party vendors at the COMMON vendor exposition today and asked each of them one simple question: will your software run under IBM i 7.2 today? Continue reading

WordPress 3.8.3 and 3.7.3 Security Releases Now Available: Version 3.9 This Week?

wordpress wThe WordPress 3.8.3 security release is now available.

WordPress had released the 3.8.2 security release last week. But they found a bug in the QuickDraft feature that can make draft content accidentally disappear. 8.3.3 fixes the bug and may restore the missing draft content, if certain conditions are present on your site.

To fix the 8.3.2 bug, WordPress released 8.3.3. If you’re on auto-update, it may already be installed on your Web site. If you’re not on auto-update, you can get more information by clicking here.

Since WordPress released the same Quick Draft code in last week’s 3.7.2 release, there is also a new 3.7.3 release to address the issue in 3.7.2 installs.

There doesn’t appear to be any other features in 8.3.3 above the 8.3.2 release. Continue reading

Shortening a Tweet to Fit into 140 Characters

twitter iconWriting a tweet is like writing a good headline with a link. You need to grab readers’ interest, give them something of value, and encourage them to read more about the subject or reply. You also may want to include a #hashtag, a photo link, a designation such as RT or MT, or another user (or two’s) Twitter handles (such as @joehertvik).

And all you have to do is fit it into 140 characters. Sheesh.

To meet that challenge, here are six tips I use for shortening Tweets while still saying something interesting and encouraging people to open another link. I’ve included examples of how to use these techniques. Continue reading

Viewing LinkedIn Activity Feeds for Individual Users

choosing doors to open

Note: since this article was written, LinkedIn re-added the ability to see individual user activity feeds inside LI profiles. This feature was added back to profile browser views in May 2014. Click on this link to see how to view an individual’s activity feed from their Linked user profile.

**Original article from December 2013***

As I reported previously, in December 2013 LinkedIn removed the activity feed from all LinkedIn profile pages. As a result, you can no longer see all the recent activity (status updates, profile changes, discussion comments, etc) directly from a user’s LI profile page.

After writing that post, I started a discussion in the LinkedIn Strategies group, asking people what they were doing to compensate for the missing activity feeds. That discussion showcased several different helpful alternatives for viewing individual activity feeds outside of a LI user’s profile page.

Here are the alternatives the group found for viewing LinkedIn activity feeds for any LinkedIn user you are connected to. Thanks to all who contributed to this discovery process. Continue reading

IBM i for Power Systems, Power i, IBM i: What Do You Mean by That? A Primer (Rev 2.0)

ibm i a system designed for businessSince their introduction, there’s always been some confusion about what people mean when they say IBM i, IBM i for Power systems, and Power i. The terms are not interchangeable.

(First written on March 9th; substantially rewritten on March 16th)

Here’s my primer on when and how to use the terms IBM i, IBM i for Power, and Power i for people writing articles, blogs, case studies, white papers, etc. These are my own definitions and best suggestions for referring to or writing about the platform and the operating system. If you’d like to suggest modifications or another source for these terms, please post a comment here or email me at joe@joehertvik.com.

Note: this is revision two of this article, based on reader and IBM i community suggestions. I’ll attempt to keep this article current as more information comes my way, and the content may change from time to time.

Francisco_de_Goya_y_Lucientes_-_Gaspar_Melchor_de_Jovellanos

A picture of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos as he chokes while trying to come up with a new blog post about river otters (as painted by Goya)

Writer’s block isn’t a new thing when it comes to business blogging. It’s been around since the first caveman got frustrated, trying to figure out which new animal he should paint on the wall.

To ease your content creation woes when you’re blocked, here’s twelve ways I’ve found to jump-start your blog content creation machinery when it starts to stall. The next time you’re having trouble creating content, think about these techniques for coming up with a meaningful blog post for your readers. They work for me.

1. Index existing articles or Web sites that have value to your readers. Create a resource for your readers to find associated content. On my blog, I’ve tried to do this with IBM i community posts that present category links that I created just for their reference. And surprisingly enough, these are some of the most referenced areas of the site. Continue reading
