Since 2002, I’ve been writing Admin Alerts columns on IBM i administration for the IT Jungle Web site (thanks, TPM). There must be close to 500 of them by now.
IT Jungle keeps the collected articles on the Admin Alert Web page. Every once in a while, I link to a few articles in sequence that demonstrate how to perform all aspects of a certain IBM i administrative function.
This week, I’m spotlighting a pair of articles I wrote in 2008 and 2011 that show you how to set up a complete and redundant messaging system for off-hours alerts on an IBM i box.
These articles are:
- Configuring Messaging Software for Overnight Monitoring – Setting up a monitoring system using third-party messaging software to alert your techs when an IBM i problem occurs
- Adding Redundancy to Power i System Monitoring , modifying your monitoring system so that it will still send alert messages even when your Ethernet system is down.
These techniques have helped my shops detect a lots of issues when critical program errors and hardware failures occur during off-hours. I hope they help you in administering your shop, too.
