This is part seven of my live blog on updating an i5/OS V5R4 machine to i 6.1. You can view all the posts for this upgrade by clicking here.
We’re currently waiting for the two object conversion jobs to finish running. We expect those jobs to take several hours so we’re breaking camp and will perform the last steps of the upgrade later.
These are the final steps we need to perform after object conversion:
- Two minor changes to third-party software to allow it to work with i 6.1. One package needs to be reloaded from CD and another needs to replace one object.
- Another full-system backup to save a copy of the entire system with all the 6.1 upgrade activities applied. If we were rushed for time, we would just take an operating system backup in order to restart production. But since we have time, we’ll perform a full system backup so that we can restore at the new OS level, if necessary.
After these steps are complete, the Applications team will start working with the new OS. At some point, their change management software will need to be changed because the production system is still at i5/OS V5R4 and this development system is now at i 6.1. So all promotions from development to production will need to be promoted at the prior system level.
Overall, the upgrade went fairly smooth. Barring no further problems, I clock this upgrade at 20 hours from the time we started the first full systems backup at 4:00 AM through the upgrade and conversion process through the concluding full system backup around midnight.
This concludes my blog posts on our i 6.1 upgrade. If you’re reading this and have any questions, feel free to send me an email at joe@joehertvik.com or post a comment at the bottom of any of the posts.
Thanks for reading. I’m going to take a nap.
