IT Jungle: Getting Started with an i5/OS V5R4 to i 6.1 Upgrade

IT Jungle just published my latest article on getting started with an i5/OS V5R4 to i 6.1 upgrade. I cover a lot of issues in planning for the upgrade, including:

  • Some guidelines for deciding whether to upgrade to i 6.1 or i 7.1. In my mind, you should go to 7.1, if you can. But it’s by no means a slam dunk decision.
  • Initial research and the ubiquitous Memo to Users document that is required reading for anyone working on the upgrade team.
  • Getting started with object conversion for your upgrade, which is probably the single most complicated task when moving from i5/OS V5R4
  • Where to get your installation instructions and the importance of learning to use image catalogs for the many upgrade and installation DVDs you’ll have to spin

  1. Thomas Hauber says:

I had heard in the past that IBM was planning with one of these releases to obsolete SEU and SDA. Is that true? And if so what are my options as far as a simple programming interface for CL and RPG?

I absolutely hated the PC based code editing system that IBM introduced a few years ago. It ran like a dog on our XP machines and now that we are mostly Mac based I bet IBM does not have a client for us.

  2. Craig Sutton says:

@Thomas Hauber: My company is currently at 7.1 and I can tell you that as far as SEU and SDA you are still good. So whether you are are going to 6.1 or 7.1 you will be ok for the time being. I can’t speak for future releases.
