If you’re having trouble reading this embedded tweet, Lissa’s tip reads:

#LinkedIn Secret: Can’t get a bullet into your LinkedIn profile? Create one in Word, then Copy and Paste.

Non-Replicated Objects: Something to Consider in IBM i HA Environments

rule of thumbOne of my clients has what I’d consider a mature IBM i High Availability environment using Mimix software on Capacity BackUp system (CBU). First implemented in 2006 and tested every year since then (with 1-2 extended switch-overs where the system ran live for several days to a week),

But after a recent user-certification HA Exercise , we noticed one finding that may be particular to mature HA environments like this. Continue reading

Getting IBM i FTP Sessions to Work After an i 6.1 or 7.1 Upgrade

If you find that your FTP sessions are unable to transfer data after an i 6.1 or 7.1 OS upgrade, the problem may be in the way IBM changed FTP sessions for i 6.1 and above.

ftp

IT Jungle: How to automatically answer IBM i record locks

itj-logoIT Jungle just published my latest tip on auto-answering IBM i record lock messages, where I answered the following reader question.

My Power i system is driving me crazy with RPG1218 record lock messages. Because of the way one of our applications was written, we receive RPG1218 messages several times a day. The record lock only lasts a minute. When we enter a retry on the locked record, the system is always able to update the record. Is there any way to auto-answer these record locks?

Three Things to Do When Blogging and Publishing On-line

Why arent you blogging

One of the problems with accessing on-line publications (including blogs) is that it’s hard for readers to verify the accuracy, reliability, and freshness of the content you’re reading. Especially in a technical article where a solution written for one version of a product may not work in a later version.

Here are three things I believe that anyone posting content should do in order to help readers insure your post is accurate and fit for its intended purpose. These aren’t difficult to add to a post, but they can help enhance your credibility by helping the reader evaluate whether the content will work for them now and in the future. Continue reading

And then someone gets fired: IBM i ERP Implementations Gone Bad

you are fired

I was reading Dan Burger’s IT Jungle article called Fear or Freedom: IBM i ERP Upgrades about the fears and opportunities involved in upgrading old ERP systems and how many ERP vendors are seeing 2014 as the “year of the ERP upgrade”. An IBM Technical Delivery Assessment Primer

question mark signWhen you buy an IBM hardware product, the business partner or IBM will generally perform a Technical Delivery Assessment (TDA) meeting with you to insure that the solution you’re going to buy is appropriate for your environment and meets your needs.

A TDA is really a newish name for the old Solution Assurance (SA) process. TDAs are intended to help guarantee the following items are met before a machine is purchased, delivered, and installed:

  • That the solution meets customer requirements
  • That the proposed solution is technologically viable
  • That there aren’t issues around delivery and installation
  • That all the risks around using the solution have been identified and properly assessed
